New womenswear product helps boost John Lewis fashion sales

Fashion sales enjoyed an uplift at John Lewis last week with sales of new product in womenswear proving to be particularly strong.

Overall fashion sales in the week to July 21 were up 7.6% compared to the same week a year ago, with sales of new product in womenswear and women’s accessories up by 25%.

The department store retailer said that four out of the five fashion buying groups had performed strongly as the warmer weather in the south of the country helped to drive sales of seasonal product.

Total sales at John Lewis rose 11.2% compared to the same week last year with the retailer’s Poole store in Dorset being the star performer, recording a 17.6% rise in sales compared to last year.

John Lewis also noted that sales of its Olympic 2012 merchandise had been strong

Susan Young head of merchandising central operations at John Lewis, said: “The momentum around London 2012 is unlikely to drop, and four of our stores have been clad in London 2012 wraps, which will be in place until September.”

She added that Stratford sales were weighted towards London 2012 products.
