New York Fashion Week: Beckham, Wang and von Furstenberg

All eyes were on New York Fashion Week this weekend as Victoria Beckham, Alexander Wang and Diane von Furstenberg showcased their latest collections and supermodel Naomi Cambell took to the catwalk at Zac Posen’s show.

In a move on from her usual showcase of dresses Victoria Beckham’s spring 13 collection offered up a selection of chic tailored pieces alongside her more traditional look.

The collection, which featured slim fit trousers and crisp shirts, was kept clean with silhouettes structured but the tailored looks were given a delicate feminine touch with lace, pleated chiffon and bra tops.

Beckham’s dress range, which comprised pieces for both day and evening, featured shirtdresses, silk shift dresses and a black slip style sundress. The minimal black and white colour palette was kept fresh with flashes of poppy red.

Beckham also showcased a range of flat lace up sandals and buckled loafers - a step away from the sky high heels the designer is known for.

Laser cut leather was the order of the day at Alexander Wang’s show this weekend. The designer’s spring 13 collection contained pieces that had been slashed from top to bottom and from side to side revealing bare flesh underneath, while other pieces had been sliced and then tacked back together with thread.

Minimalist sporty looks were mixed with smarter pieces, as tailored shorts were teamed with boxy hockey jerseys and hooded pullovers were worn over pencil skirts. All looks were completed with strappy sandals wrapped high around the calf

Colours were kept simple with the range not straying from basic black, white, beige and grey, however in the finale the lights dropped and the pieces were revealed to be glow in the dark.

Diane von Furstenberg’s ‘70s inspired collection injected a huge dose of glamour to the catwalk.

Creative director Yvan Mispelaere employed a plethora of colours from zesty lime and orange to turquoise and pink alongside an abundance of bold prints and striking embellishment.

Silhouettes were kept loose with pieces including palazzo pants, floaty silk maxi dresses, loose-fitting jumpsuits and draped blouses with billowing sleeves.

Dresses were frequently layered over trousers and outfits included boxy tunics teamed with wide leg trousers and a navy halterneck dress over orange trousers. Accessories kept up the glamourous appeal with shiny silver waist belts and chain strap sandals.
