New York Fashion Week kicks off with colour

The spring 10 fashion weeks kicked off yesterday with traditional New York opener BCBG Max Azria getting proceedings going in the iconic Bryant Park tent. The collection nodded heavily to the vivid colour palette and sexy girl silhouettes of Brit hotshot Matthew Williamson.

It started casually with modest draped T-shirt dresses in grey and white jersey before lurching full throttle into a host of girl-on-the-town minis. Bright painterly prints hugged the body, or asymmetrically draped off one shoulder, in hot pink, violet, sunshine yellow and sky blue. Panelling was integral, as either piped slabs of block colour or sections of black diamond-effect padding were used to balance out the brashness of the knockout prints.

The first signs that the ultra angular silhouettes of autumn 09 will be toned down for spring came through via a series of softly peaked shoulders replacing the oversized pyramid shapes of last season, while floor length dresses took a more ethereal turn courtesy of overlays of floaty black chiffon.
