New York Fashion Week: Marc by Marc Jacobs tastes the rainbow

Not one to shy away from statement shows, Marc Jacobs’ diffusion line Marc by Marc Jacobs burst onto the catwalk yesterday with a rainbow palette of bold tribal prints which stood out from the relative safe looks, which have so far characterised the first international fashion week of spring 10.

Looking more London than NYC, the eye watering brights left no colour stone unturned as lemon, fuchsia and sea blue were paired with violet, fiery scarlet and cooler mint green tones on Marc Jacobs’ raft of wide-striped mini dresses, ethnic print peasant style frocks, diamond knit jumpers, cutesy playsuits and floral bubble skirts.

Marc Jacobs’ signature checks detracted somewhat from the liveliness of the rest of the Marc by Marc Jacobs collection but allowed buyers to digest the early colour onslaught before the show finished off its technicolour procession with shiny candy striped skirts and glossy satin bubble dresses. Dhoti pants remain in favour for trousers this season, although the slabs of bright block colour decorating them were less commercial than other pieces in this collection.
