Next to report 'recovery in sales' over Christmas

Next is expected to report total sales growth of 2.3% later this week, despite challenging conditions on the high street.

The mid-market fashion retailer is thought to have benefited from strong trading from its catalogue and online businesses, which will more than offset weakness in its stores.

Rebecca McClellan, an analyst at Santander, forecast “quite a recovery in sales momentum” against the third quarter, when Next’s sales fell by 3.6%.

She pointed out that Next had not resorted to “abnormal” discounting.
