Nike in hot water over marketing of balaclava

Nike has come under fire for selling a balaclava that critics say plays on stereotypes of black youths involved in gang violence according to The Guardian.

The Nike x MMW balaclava was removed from the activewear retailer’s website yesterday after facing backlash for the full-face balaclava that extended over the entire face and neck, and across the upper chest of wearers.

Although intended to keep wearers warm during cold weather, critics remarked that the marketing appeared aimed at youngsters desiring a gang-inspired look. 

The NikeLab NRG Beryllium Balaclava x MMW was launched on 12 July, priced at £69, as part of a range of collaborations with American designer Matthew Williams.

Most of the range has sold out, yet the balaclava has been completely withdrawn from sale.

The product page on the Nike website was replaced yesterday with a message that said: “The product you are looking for is no longer available.”
