Obituary: Footwear veteran Richard Ford

Richard Ford, former president of the Society of Shoe Fitters, has died.

Ford, who held the presidency between 1990 and 1991, was diagnosed with cancer in 2013. He leaves a son, Simon, and daughter, Rebecca, and a granddaughter. Ford’s wife Yvonne died in March 2013.

Ford started in the trade in 1959 as a trainee sales assistant in Footman’s in Ipswich and in 1962 became assistant manager of Bowhill & Elliott in Ipswich.

After eight years, he became the manager of K Shoes in Ipswich and after 10 years was headhunted back to Bowhill & Elliott as manager. Three years later he became a director.

Ford qualified to be a member of the Society of Shoe Fitters member in 1985 and some years later became a tutor. He was vice president from 1989 to 1990 before becoming president the following year.
