OFT investigates whether Sports Direct and JJB merger on cards

The Office of Fair Trading is investigating whether arrangements are ‘in progress or in contemplation’ for a merger between JJB Sports and Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct chain.

The OFT said in a statement that if it found that there was a relevant merger situation it would investigate whether there would be, “a substantial lessening of competition within any market or markets in the UK for goods or services that warrants reference to the Competition Commission for investigation.”

A spokesman for Sports Direct said the sportswear retailer does still hold a stake in JJB Sports, despite reports that it had sold its shareholding to JD Sports Fashion last week.

The OFT said that anyone with competition or public interest issues around JJB Sports and Sports Direct should write to it by December 16.
