OFT to probe JJB Sports' sale of stores to Sports Direct

The Office of Fair trading (OFT) is inviting representations relating to Sports Direct's acquisition of a number of stores from rival JJB Sports.

Earlier this month, the OFT said that it was investigating the possibility of competition issues when Sports Direct increased its stake in JJB Sports to around 20%, by buying a 4.7% stake in October.

At the time, the OFT invited representations about any competition or public interest issues relating to the deal, with a deadline of December 16.

Today, the OFT said that it would probe the purchase of JJB Sports' stores by Sports Direct at the beginning of the month, separately to see if there were any local competition issues.

It said that any written representations regarding this specific issue should be made by January 7.
