Leather producer Pittards is poised to launch its first range of handbags after a strategic move towards manufacturing and wholesaling products for retail.
The England Collection – which will retail between £175 and £295 and be available for autumn 14 – will include its signature 1964 tote bag, shoulder bags, clutches and satchels. It is now seeking retailers for distribution.
Somerset-based Pittards, which has been in operation for 200 years, prepares and wholesales leather for manufacturers including international sports goods brand Nike.
It has installed a design team at its factory in Yeovil and has converted a specialist area for product design and development.
Chief executive Reg Hankey said: “Our expertise and skill in developing and sourcing the very best British hides and making them into stunning leathers means we have on hand a ready supply of the finest materials that can be turned into a range of products.
“A high percentage of the leather we make goes overseas to supply many of the world’s top brands. This means [we are] susceptible to the fluctuations of global currencies. Recently, our mainly dollar-denominated exports have been adversely affected by moves in exchange rates and we need to balance the business more”.
