Pitti Uomo: strong turnout, budgets flat

UK buyers were out in force on the opening day of Italian menswear trade show Pitti Uomo although budgets looked to be flat.

Buyers including Manchester menswear indie Oi Polloi, Newcastle menswear indie The End, retailer JD, London indie Start Boutique, luxury menswear etailer Mr Porter and York based super indie Coggles attended the first day of the exhibtion at Fortezza da Basso in Florence yesterday. Ths show runs until Friday.

However, despite the strong showing buyers looked to be cautious with their budgets, with many suggesting budgets would be flat for spring 12.

Huw Phillips, menswear account manager at Nicole Farhi, said that buyers’ budgets were generally flat on last year and that they were being ruthless with underperforming brands.

He said: “If they’re not getting the sell through, then buyers are dropping brands after one season [instead of the normal three].”
