The company hopes to add a 330,000 sq ft extension to the shopping centre, which will be home to new restaurants and an open air terrace, as well as new café court, a gym and a cinema.

British Land also plans to improve accessibility and parking at Meadowhall, investing in electric car charging points, pedestrian walkways and a new multi-storey car park.

Sheffield City Council is expected to rule on whether the proposed changes can go ahead in early 2017.

An ongoing £60m refurbishment of the entire shopping centre is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
