Prada profits ahead of forecasts

Luxury label Prada said that its operating profit for 2009 would come in ahead of its own expectations, due to a rise of more than 14% in retail sales.

Prada said that operating profit for last year would be better than the previous year, but did not provide more details.

The Milan-based fashion house, which is owned by designer Miuccia Prada and her husband Patrizio Bertelli, reported an EBITDA of €282m (£248m) in 2008.

The better than forecast performance has sounded a positive note for the luxury sector where labels such as Versace, which has reported sales and profits declines, have suffered in the past year.

Prada invested €120m (£105.6m) last year in its development plan.
