Price matching drives uplift in John Lewis fashion sales

John Lewis fashion sales grew by 7.7% for the week ended 4 March compared to the same week last year, after it price matched a competitior’s promotion.

Both men’s and womenswear posted an uplift in sales during the week, the department store chain said.

“This was largely driven by matching a competitor promotion, which we price matched under our Never Knowingly Undersold policy,” said Alison Smith, head of shop trade for the south and west.

Total sales for the week at John Lewis were £80.4m, up 2.8% on last year.

Fashion sales have risen by 0.1% for past five weeks of John Lewis’s new financial year, while electricals and home technology rose by 2.2% and home posted a decline of 0.2% against the same period in 2015.
