Price matching hits John Lewis fashion sales

John Lewis posted a 3% dip in fashion sales in the week to 17 June, compared with the same period in 2016, because of the “impact of different timings of a competitor price match promotion”.

However, the retailer said warm weather clothing sales jumped by 17%, while beauty sales experienced a 7.9% increase.

The decline in fashion sales was offset by a 5.4% increase in electrical and home technology sales, which were boosted by new product releases from Apple.

Total year-on-year sales for the week were down by 1.4% to £78.1m.
