Primark sales rise 18%

Primark saw sales leap 18% for the 16 weeks to January 3.

Primark’s parent company Associated British Food said that performance at the value fashion chain over Christmas had been ahead of expectations. It added that the group had seen “very good” like for like growth but did not attach a figure.

At January 3 Primark had 187 stores equating to 5.6 million sq ft of selling space.

Primark added that results from its first store in the Netherlands, which opened in Rotterdam last year, had been “very encouraging”.

Associated British Foods said of the group: “As previously highlighted, the group will not be immune from the worsening economic climate and particularly the pressure on consumers spending. We have budgeted for little change in net earnings for the full year and still anticipate results in line with that expectation.”
