Pringle to show at London Fashion Week

Pringle, the Scottish knitwear brand, is set to leave the Milan catwalks to show during London Fashion Week this September.

Pringle will join Burberry and Matthew Williamson in returning to the UK capital to help London Fashion Week celebrate its 25th birthday. Pringle itself it celebrating its 195th birthday this year. The brand is likely to continue to show in London beyond this September’s event.

“It made sense that if we are a British brand and our history is here, then we should be showing in London.”

Mary-Adair Macaire, chief executive, Pringle

Pringle’s new chief executive, Mary-Adair Macaire, who joined the British heritage brand in September from Chanel, told that she planned to stay true to Pringle’s heritage while fine-tuning distribution.

She added: “It made sense that if we are a British brand and our history is here, then we should be showing in London.”

British Fashion Council chairman Harold Tillman added: “We are delighted that Pringle of Scotland are returning to London for our 25th year celebrations. It is fantastic to have a brand with such a strong British heritage showing alongside our emerging stars such as Giles, Christopher Kane, Marios Schwab and Richard Nicoll”.

Separately Macaire has hired Andrew Wright as director of global sales. Wright joined the company last month. He was previously head of international wholesale at Manford 7 Sons and has held management posts at Harry’s of London and Polo Ralph Lauren footwear and accessories.

Benoit Duverger has also been hired as director of global communications. Duverger joins from Puma, where he was creative director of brand communications, on June 15.

Pringle posted losses of £9.4 million for the year to March 29 2008.

London Fashion Week takes place September 18-22 at Somerset House in London.

  • A third brand is coming back to London Fashion Week. It's really gathering momentum now. It could turn out to be quite a good event this time with British heritage brands likes Burberry and Pringle. Burberry certainly is a must-see for most buyers and press so I hope this brings good attendance in spite of the economic climate.

  • Pringle has a lot of work to do to turn a profit. Is showing at London Fashion Week really what it needs? Look at John Smedley, that's a successful premium knitwear brand that picked up two awards at UKFE last week.
