Profits soar at Amazon

Operating profit at Amazon jumped 80% year on year in the three months to 31 December to $3.8bn (£2.9bn).

Net sales for the quarter increased 20% to $72.4bn (£55.2bn) compared with the same period in 2017.

During the quarter, Amazon announced plans to open a new corporate office in Manchester in 2019 and increase the capacity of its development centres in Scotland and Cambridge. The investment will provide additional capacity for more than 1,000 new skilled roles in the UK.

Amazon has invested £9.3bn in its UK operations since 2010 and now has more than 27,500 employees in the UK.

It has increased its minimum wage to £10.50 for the London area and £9.50 for the rest of the UK for all full-time, part-time, temporary and seasonal employees.

Amazon Fashion launched its ”try before you buy” service Prime Wardrobe in the UK in October.
