Property investor acquires majority stake in Richard James

A New York-based property investor has taken a majority stake in Savile Row menswear firm Richard James as it embarks on international expansion.

The investment will allow the brand to expand in the US and Hong Kong.

Charles S Cohen has a property portfolio of more than 12 million sq ft across the US and is the owner of Cohen Media Group, which produces and distributes classic films. He will assume the role of chairman, while Richard James’ co-founder Sean Dixon will continue as managing director.

Dixon said: “Richard, [design director] Toby Lamb and I are incredibly excited about this once in a lifetime opportunity to propel [the firm] further on a global level.

”Charles brings a vision that matches our own and the wherewithal to accelerate our plans. We are looking forward to taking full advantage of the new horizons this partnership will open up.”

Cohen said he has been a customer and supporter of the brand for a long time, so the decision to invest and get involved “was an easy one”.

James and Dixon founded Richard James in 1992.
