Psyche expands to support growing online sales

Middlesbrough premium independent Psyche is adding another floor to its three-storey building to accommodate its growing online department.

The £300,000 extension will house a buyers’ office, offices for support staff, more stock space, a new staff room, toilets and a boardroom.

Psyche plans to recruit six new employees to its headcount of more than 70 people over the next three months.

The new floor is expected to be completed in September, and an official launch is pencilled for 14 October.

Owner Steve Cochrane told Drapers online sales are up 35.9% from 1 February to date, compared with last year, when sales rose by 32%. Store sales are flat compared with last year.

“The website is growing fast and it will be bigger than the store at some point next year,” he said.

The retailer relaunched its website last year.
