Psyche owner honoured by Middlesbrough mayor

Retail entrepreneur Steve Cochrane was this week honoured for his “economic, social and physical regeneration” of Middlesbrough town centre in an award ceremony hosted at his own Linthorpe Road store.

The Psyche and Style Lab business founder was presented with the special civic award by Mayor Ray Mallon, who is understood to have consulted other local counselors and businesses on the decision to recognise the 55-year-old’s contribution to the community.

Cochrane has previously won UK Designer Retailer of the Year in 1995 and 2004 as well as a slew of personal awards.

Commenting on the win, Cochrane said: “Retail is challenging, it has its ups and downs, so for someone to do this off their own back is pretty awesome.”

In October, Cochrane opened an 8,000 sq ft store dedicated to young fashion brands, also in Middlesbrough, and is already planning further locations.
