Regent Street switches on Christmas lights

The Christmas lights on London's Regent Street were switched on last night to kick-start this year's festive shopping season.

The lights, entitled Unity and sponsored by Nokia, were turned on with the help of shoppers, who walked the length of the street with festive entertainers.

During the run-up to Christmas, the lights will change their formation depending on the density of pedestrians in the street, measured by motion cameras.

Regent Street will be illuminated until January 6.
