Retail sales pick up in August

UK retail sales inched up 1.3% during the four weeks to 26 August, compared with the same period in 2016. 

Sales on a total basis rose 2.4% in August, the BRC-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor showed.

This marked the strongest performance seen since Easter, above the three-month and 12-month averages of 1.9% and 1.6% respectively.

In the three months to August, non-food retail sales in the UK grew 0.6% on a like-for-like basis and 0.9% on a total basis, above the 12-month total average increase of 0.6%.

Non-food online sales grew 11% in August, above both the three-month and 12-month averages of 9.8% and 8.8% respectively.
