Retailers gear up for Cyber Monday

Retailers are getting ready for a £500m online shopping surge today (December 1) as Cyber Monday continues the discounting frenzy from last week’s Black Friday.

Visa said £600m of the £1.6bn spent today will be on online as shoppers make the most of the bargains lined up by etailers and retailers alike.

Amazon.co.uk is to release hundreds of limited ‘lightning deals’, which offer discounts for a specific period, with new offers coming online every 10 minutes. The etailer, which sold 5.5 million items on Friday at a rate of 64 purchases per second, has employed an extra 13,000 staff to meet the pre-Christmas demand.

Christmas spending is expected to reach £36.5bn over the month of December.
