Retailers set for £99bn ‘golden quarter’

Retail sales in the valuable fourth “golden quarter” of 2018 are set to rise by 2% year on year to £98.8bn, but fashion is expected to face further challenges.

Non-food sales are expected to rise by 1.6% for the quarter – driven by health and beauty, research from GlobalData shows.

The fashion sector is forecast to face further difficulties, with mid-market players predicted to be hit by shoppers “trading up” on quality over the festive season.

However, pureplay retailers – such as Asos and Boohoo are anticipated to benefit over Christmas, thanks to their convenient delivery options.

GlobalData also predicts that online retailers will be boosted by the new Instagram shopping function, which will drive impulse purchases of gifts and partywear.
