Retailers shutter 11.6m sq ft of store space

Retail space equivalent to 180 football pitches has been handed back to landlords as the high street continues to struggle.

An analysis by property consultancy Colliers International shows 11.6m sq ft of retail space has been “lost” through administrations, company voluntary arrangements (CVAs) and planned store closures this year.

Colliers said the 11.6m sq ft includes the 2m sq ft of retail space that Marks & Spencer plans to offload by closing 100 stores. The retailer announced last month that it plans to downsize its UK store portfolio and move more of its business online.
