Retailers warned to prepare for new £1 coin

Businesses have been urged to get ready for the arrival of the new 12-sided £1 coin in March.

The Treasury is encouraging retailers to seek advice on how to adapt machines and train staff ahead of the introduction of the new coin.

Both old and new coins will be accepted for six months until autumn 17.

It is thought that there are 45 million fake £1 coins in circulation. The new coin will be more secure, the government said.
