River Island to launch online with Next

Young fashion retailer River Island is set to begin selling its ranges via the Next website.

The autumn 18 collection from River Island will go on sale via the Next’s site on 20 September. Women’s, men’s and children’s wear will all be on sale for UK and international shoppers.

Sarah Eldridge, head of wholesale for River Island, said: “To build on the success of our wholesale business and continue to focus on River Island’s digital strategy, we welcome the exciting opportunity of working with Next as a way to reach out and engage with new customers across all of our product divisions.”

River Island joins brands such as French Connection, Fat Face, Joules and Karen Millen, which also sell via the Next website.

  • Wrong direction to align themselves with other high street retailers - whose target customer is generally older than River Island's. There is the risk of losing their USP and looking like Karen Millen's poor cousin.

  • Smart move for both, RI now on Asos and Next, whilst Topman/Topshop is on neither despite other Arcadia Brands being on Asos and performing well they are still resisting TM/TS. This move will bring RI to another audience that may have not considered it and will give Next a bit more credibility/exposure to faster fashion. I wouldn't leave any stone unturned at present otherwise you're likely to get left behind in a rapidly evolving highly competitive market.
