Sainsbury's will launch plus- and petite-size ranges for the first time next year, ahead of further expansion plans as it dedicates more space to its Tu clothing line.
Tu buying and design director Adrian Mountford told Drapers the ranges would launch in spring 08, initially in 50 stores.
"Plus and petite ranges fit our customer profile perfectly and will allow us to grow our market share in womenswear," he said. "As clothing continues to benefit from more space in store, we'll be able to expand into further product categories, which are already in the pipeline."
Each range will comprise between 20 and 25 pieces, and prices will be in line with Tu's mainline.
The petite offer will be called Tu Petite, but the name of the plus-size collection is yet to be decided. It will be revealed in the next couple of months.
Mountford added: "In terms of product, the petite line will be very similar to our current range, just in smaller sizes. However, the plus-size collection will be different. Shape and fabrics will both be important, with linen being one of the fabrics of choice."
Sainsbury's will roll out the ranges to more of its stores for autumn 08.
