Sainsbury’s clothing sales growth slows

Sales at Sainsbury’s clothing brand Tu edged up by 1% in the 15 weeks to 6 January, in a slowdown after four consecutive quarters of steady growth.

This compares to growth of 6.3% in the second quarter of the year, and 9.4% in the same period in 2016.

The retailer said the market was impacted ”by warm weather at the start of the autumn/winter season”.

However, it added that its clothing offer has been “growing market share and outperforming a weak market”.

Total retail sales at the supermarket, excluding fuel, were up 1.2% compared with the same quarter last year, while like-for-like sales excluding fuel were up 1.1%.
