Sainsbury’s Tu sold one pair of men’s jeans every 15 seconds and a pair of women’s jeans every 26 seconds in the year ended March 12, director of non-food trading James Brown told Drapers.
During the year in which the supermarket chain became the UK’s sixth largest clothing retailer by volume and 10th largest by value, Tu sales grew by 8.5% year on year.
Brown said: “Our clothing business continues to go from strength to strength.
“In store, our new department store look and feel layout is helping to encourage customers to browse and shop. The refreshing of the Tu ranges every six weeks, means our customer will always be able to find new items to fit into their wardrobe.”
Sales of men’s, women’s and kids’ denim increased 26% year on year, while menswear increased by 6.8%, helped by the introduction of heritage men’s sportswear brand Admiral.
