Sales across Gap brands down after 'challenging' May

US retail group Gap’s like-for-like sales were down 6% year on year in May, as all three of its main brands experienced a difficult month of trading.

Like-for-like sales at the eponymous Gap chain were down 3% in the four weeks to May 28, while sales at Old Navy and Banana Republic fell 7% and 11% respectively.  

Group net sales were down 5% to $1.2bn (£818m).
