Sales drop in the run-up to Black Friday

Total like-for-like sales had their steepest decline since April last week, down 3.73%, the BDO High Street Sales Tracker has reported.

For the week to 11 November, in-store like-for-like sales performed particularly badly, dropping 7.6% on the same week last year as shoppers were deterred by wet weather at the weekend and waited for Black Friday Sales.

In-store like-for-like sales of fashion followed the overall trend, dropping 7.3%. This was the worst-performing week for in-store sales since March this year.

Footfall declined 4.5% compared with the same week last year. Shopping centres experienced the largest drop, of 5.9%, followed by retail parks, down 4.7%, and 3.8% on the high street.

Total online sales grew by 11.07%.
