Schoolwear helps boost strong week for fashion sales at John Lewis

Fashion sales enjoyed a solid performance at department store John Lewis this week, up 7.7% in the week to September 3, compared to the same week last year.

The retailer said that the strong fashion sales were supported by last-minute purchases of schoolwear and related products with kid’s footwear enjoying a record week, 16% up on the same week last year.

New product in womenswear and accessories was also said to help drive fashion sales.

Overall sales were up 7.1% on the same week last year and 13.1% up on the same week in 2009. Saturday trading also narrowly beat that of the same Saturday last year, up by 0.1%.

Online sale at Johnlewis.com were also strong achieving a 38.1% increase on last year and taking their second-highest sterling amount since the full trading year began. Schoolwear was said to boost online sales and Click & Collect also had an outstanding week.

Director of operational development Lesley Ballantyne said: “Next week sees the opening of John Lewis Stratford City, whith the London 2012 Games now less than a year awar. The shop looks stunning and is something for the division to be truly proud of.”
