Scottish Retail Sales flat in September

Scottish retail sales were flat on a like for like basis in September - the worst performance since March 2006 - and clothing sales were in negative territory.

Total retail sales in Scotland rose 4.6% against the same period last year according to data from the Scottish Retail Consortium.

September's growth was driven by food. Clothing and footwear sales were lower than in September 2007 despite heavy discounting.

Scotland's performance was better than the UK overall, where like-for-like retail sales fell back 1.5% in September.
