A sportswear etailer based in the Scottish Borders has secured almost £600,000 in funding to increase its warehouse capacity after signing a new partnership to develop a transactional UK website for Switzerland-based retail group Intersport.
Sportswise, which trades as Rugbystore.co.uk, is one of 85 UK members of Intersport. Under the new deal, it will run the group’s first ecommerce site in the UK, stocking and distributing its products throughout the country, The Herald reports. It currently has a non-transactional site, Intersport.co.uk.
The rugby clothing retailer, which launched in 1999 and employs 21 people, has almost doubled the size of its headquarters in Peebles and will take on an additional 15 members of staff as a result of the deal.
A £500,000 facility from Bank of Scotland and £82,000 grant funding from Scottish Enterprise has allowed Sportswise to increase its warehouse capacity from 16,000 sq ft to 27,000 sq ft.
“Intersport didn’t have an online retail platform themselves so they approached us to see if we could operate and run it for them in the UK,” Sportswise manging director Fraser Patterson told the newspaper.
“When consumers place orders online, they’ll come directly to us. We’ll have the stock-holding here and we’ll pick and pack and despatch them from our Peebles base to anywhere in the UK.”
Sportwise will pay a royalty to Intersport for every sale. Patterson predicted the business could double its revenues within the next two years.
Sportswise is jointly owned by director Kenny Oliver, who has worked in the business since 1977, and the family of Kenny and Paul Graham, previous Intersport suppliers who bought out the original Sportswise founders in 1988.
