Select beats high street woes

Young fashion retailer Select saw its April sales increase by 11%.

Select, which revealed its average selling price as £7.35, noted that its growth came against a continued backdrop of downwards pressure, highlighting the British Retail Consortium’s figures for April fell 2.2%.

Cafer Mahiroglu, chief executive of Select said: “As evidence suggests, in recessionary times there is sustained, even growing demand for a viable alternative on the high street for trend-driven, affordable fashion product.”

The retailer said online sales for the year to date were up 110% compared with 2012, driven in part by international orders from mainland Europe and the US.

Mahiroglu said: “We’re attacking with a combination of the right product at the right price and a hands-on, ambitious approach from the top-down.”

Earlier this year the retailer announced expansion plans to open 40 new stores a year over the next five years.
