Selfridges confirms Christmas sales jump

Selfridges has confirmed a 10% rise in sales in the four weeks to Christmas day, resulting in record sales for the period.

The department store retailer said sales accelerated the week running up to 25 December, to rise by 15% on the year before.

Footfall grew by 6% at its Oxford Street flagship in the final week of the period.

Managing director Anne Pitcher said this was driven by the launch of its new accessories hall, which opened in November.

“Our ‘With love from’ theme really resonated with our visitors[;] in fact we had the best Christmas on record,” said Pitcher.

“We [see] Selfridges as a public space that builds communities; a place which is compelling, memorable and unconventional and at Christmas in particular we strive to reach beyond the imagination.”

Including its Oxford Street flagship, Selfridges operates four stores in London, Birmingham and Manchester.
