Shop Direct to axe jobs

Mail order business Shop Direct Group is to axe around 100 roles at its head office in Speke, Liverpool as part of a management restructure.

A number of new roles will also be created, with some changes in reporting lines and responsibilities. The group said that the restructure was part of plans to focus on internet sales rather than traditional mail order sales.

Since 2005, online sales at the group, which includes Littlewoods, have increased from 18% to 50% of mail order sales, and the figure is expected to reach 70% by 2011.

Group chief executive Mark Newton-Jones said: "The proposed structure we announced today will enable us to respond swiftly to the changing needs of our customers as they increasingly choose to shop with us online. We recognise that this is a difficult time for those members of our team impacted by the review but are confident we now have the right management structure in place to continue our growth."

He added that company had a good start to the financial year driven by online growth which has seen sales continuing to grow over the last year.
