Shopper dies following escalator fall at House of Fraser in Cardiff

An elderly woman who was injured after falling down an escalator at House of Fraser in Cardiff on Christmas Eve has died.

Three people were taken to hospital after falling down the escalator at the Howells store on St Mary Street at around 11.10am.

The accident is believed to have happened when one woman fell onto another, who then fell onto the elderly woman. The woman, believed to be in her 80s, later died.

Following the accident, the escalator was checked by an engineer and no issue was found.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 11.07hrs on the morning of Wednesday December 24 to reports that three people had fallen on an escalator in the St Mary Street area of Cardiff. We responded with a Cycle Response Unit, an Emergency Ambulance and a High Dependency Service vehicle. Two patients were conveyed to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.”

A House of Fraser spokeswoman said: “It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the death of the woman who was involved in an incident in our Cardiff store on Christmas Eve. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased.

“We would like to thank our staff for their initial first aid response and care administered to the customer and also the paramedics for their quick response despite the festive season.”
