Shopper falls from escalator at Peter Jones

A man is in hospital after falling from an escalator in the Peter Jones department store in central London.

Emergency services were called to the John Lewis-owned store in Sloane Square, Chelsea, at about 1pm yesterday after the man fell from the fifth floor.

The Metropolitan Police said the man, reportedly in his 20s, is in a “serious but stable condition”. The incident is not being treated as suspicious. The store closed early yesterday after the incident, but is due to open as normal today.

This is the second escalator fall in as many months. On November 5, a man died after falling from an escalator on the third floor of Debenhams’ Oxford Street store.
