Shops on course to beat sales records today

Britain’s shops are on course for a record breaking day this Friday (December 27) as consumers seek out the best post-Christmas bargains.

Shoppers are predicted to spend £2.97bn in stores and online today – up from the previous highest of £2.8bn, reached on December 21 and 27, according to the Centre for Retail Research and the British Retail Consortium.

Friday’s total spend is expected to easily beat the £2.22bn estimated to have been taken on Boxing Day, which was itself up 5.7% on last year.

The majority of today’s total is expected to be spent in store, with CRR estimating £2.57bn will be spent in shops, up more than 7%, while £400m will be spent online.
