Simply Be and Jacamo power N Brown performance

Simply Be and Jacamo powered sales at N Brown Group this Christmas, with like-for-likes at the value retailing business up 7.2% in the six weeks to January 11.

Over the 19 weeks to the same date, total group revenue rose 5.2%, with like-for-likes up 5.1%.

The business said its men’s plus size business Jacamo had seen “excellent” growth, with a good performance at Simply Be. However it said growth in womenswear slowed in October and early November as a result of the weather, although Christmas saw a stronger performance.

The rate of gross margin was “a little below our expectations due to markdown activity”, which has delivered a clean stock position coming into 2014.

Full year forecasts remain in line with expectations.

Chief executive Angela Spindler said: “N Brown has continued to deliver robust, reliable growth whilst stepping up investment in our multi-channel, international future. Having been with the business now for six months, I am even more convinced of its substantial long-term growth potential.

“We are applying the group’s unique skills in larger size fashion through a range of increasingly distinctive, relevant, contemporary brands across a broader base of customers and channels. We are only at the start of grasping this opportunity.”

  • N Brown are running on borrowed time with Jacamo in its current format, as some brands are not keen to keep suppling SMU's to them as it is damaging their reputation and brand image being tarred with the King Size brush.

Although Jacamo claims it sells regular sizes, everybody associates it with King Sizes, and will always have the 'big guy image'. Even though their figures appear rosy now, it will be that image that will be their downfall, so if I were N Brown, I would slowly be looking to change the image of Jacamo, go improved quality and concentrate less on King Sizes, that way you will get more brands onside for the longer term.
