She revealed she had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for 15 years in her book N’oubliez Pas Que Je Joue (Don’t Forget It’s A Game), published in 2012.
In the same year, her label was sold to Hong Kong-based investment company Fung Brands, leaving the Rykiel family with a 20% stake.
No financial terms of the deal were disclosed at the time, but artistic director and current president Nathalie Rykiel, Sonia’s daughter, was named as vice chairman of the board. Rykiel remained honorary president.
Rykiel was part of a generation of designers – including Kenzo Takada – who launched their own labels outside of the established system of haute couture in 1970s Paris. She urged women to be eccentric, seductive, mysterious, and to create their own style.
