Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct has appointed Matt Pearson as interim chief financial officer after shareholders voiced concern that the role had been left unfilled for almost 18 months.
The retailer, which had been without a finance boss since December 2013, made the appointment after consulting with investors, some of whom have been worried about the management of the company.
Sports Direct chairman Keith Hellawell said: “After a thorough process and following soundings from leading institutions I am delighted that Matt has been appointed acting chief financial officer and is to join the board. Matt is already leading our group finance team and is now perfectly placed to take on the additional responsibilities of this role on an interim basis.”
Pearson was previously the company’s group financial controller, having joined the sporting goods retailer in 2007.
Bob Mellors stepped down as finance director in December 2013 after almost a decade in the role.
