Sports Direct quashes Office rumour

Sports Direct has quashed rumours that it is considering making an offer to acquire footwear retailer Office.

In a statement issued this morning the sports giant said “such speculation is unhelpful to the customers, staff, suppliers and other stakeholders of both companies”.

Instead Sports Direct said it was focusing on “building brand support for the groups premium lifestyle format – USC/Republic”.

It added: “The board believes that maintaining strong brand relationships is a strategic priority for Sports Direct, particularly given the difficulties that the competition authorities appear to have in addressing the supply issues faced by the group.”

This week the company is facing yet another shareholder revolt as it looks to reward founder Mike Ashley through a bonus scheme.  All previous attempts have failed.
