Sports Direct targets cricket and hockey in latest deal

Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct has forayed into the worlds of cricket and hockey after buying a specialist retailer from administrators.

Lovell Sports, an arm of Sports Direct, has purchased Northgame Limited, which trades under Barrington Sports.

Online retailer Lovell purchased Barrington for £261,000 from administrator FRP Advisory on 21 May, alongside another £80,000 license to occupy the firm’s premises.

According to the administrator’s report, Barrington owes £1.6m to unsecured creditors.

FRP Advisory partners Ben Woolrych and Anthony Colllier were appointed joint administrators of Northgame Limited on 26 April. The business found itself in financial difficult as a result of “adverse exchange rate movements, a significant investment in digital market and difficult trading conditions during Q1 2018, which had negatively impacted cash flow.”

Barrington Sports continues to trade from its sole existing site at Parkgate Industrial Estate in Knutsford with all jobs transferring.

The specialist sports retail is a partner for Lord’s Cricket Ground, England Cricket, England Hockey and England Netball, according to its website.
