Spring weather encourages shoppers as footfall rises

Spring weather continued to encourage shoppers onto the high street as footfall figures rose across the UK for the second week running.

Figures shared exclusively with Drapers reveal footfall rose 6.4% year-on-year across the UK, according to the Springboard Index. Footfall across the high street increased 7.2% while visitor numbers grew by 8.7% at retail parks. Shopping centres also reported a 3% rise.

However week-on-week total footfall slipped 2.2% with the 5.3% decline on the high street dragging down the overall average.

Diane Wehrle, director of retail insights at Springboard, said: “The second consecutive week of spring weather continued to encourage shoppers to all retail locations. Shopping centres saw their second rise in as many weeks with the weather enticing consumers to embrace the new seasons collections. These combined with the fast approach of Mother’s Day and Easter just around the corner have all contributed to a resurgence in shoppers.”
