Strong end to clearance for John Lewis

John Lewis enjoyed a 10.2% boost in sales to £76.5m last week as its clearance drew to a close.

Fashion sales rose 9.3% during the week to July 25 thanks largely to strong performances in menswear and kidswear.

Men’s branded casualwear and formalwear did particularly well, with sales up 27.7% and 25.5% respectively on the same week in 2014.

Although it was the first full week following the end of term, schoolwear was up 12.1%.

Overall online sales - including fashion, electricals, technology and home - were up 16.6% year on year.

Dino Rocos, operations director at John Lewis, said: “As we move towards the end of the half, we are in a good position to offer our customers a taste of things to come with a strong representation of new season stock arriving online and in our branches.

“The changeable weather is on our side as warmer snaps see increased demand for high summer lines and short showers encourage our customers to begin to think about back-to-school and the all-important second half of the year.”
