Strong womenswear performance lifts John Lewis fashion sales

John Lewis fashion sales increased by 1.1% for the week to May 23 compared with the same period in 2014, but its growth slowed compared with the rest of the year so far.

For first sixteen weeks of the 2015 financial year, fashion sales have increased 6.1%, outperforming home, up 4%, and electricals, which fell by 2%.

Wholesale womenswear sales increased by 21% during the week.

Christine Kasoulis, buying director for home, said of the week: “We had a strong start to the week while the skies were grey. Sales then dipped on Saturday as the sun came out for most of us and footfall dropped off. This was against a strong Saturday last year, owing to wet weather.”

Overall, John Lewis total sales fell by 0.5% on the same week in 2014. Online sales were up by 10.6%, driven predominantly by fashion sales, up by 18% on last year.
